At midnight tonight, kids will be staying up late and adults will be losing sleep as Harry Potter 7 (part 1) is unleashed to the viewing public. I would guess that there will be millions of Harry Potter look-a-likes roaming about tonight and at least as many jokes about how hot Hermoine has gotten. Ginny will disappoint again. Dobby will make an appearance. And Voldemort will be defeated once and for all — or will he?
Harry Potter has pervaded pop culture for the better part of a decade now and it’ll be sad to see it go in the next couple years. I wanted to highlight some of my favorite HP appearances in our culture. The Deathly Hallows is the least humorous of them all, while probably the most exciting. To make up for the lack of laughter tonight, here are some HP appearances that make me laugh.
Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant do such a great job at accentuating every celebrities’ idiosyncrasies and stereotypes in their comedy series, Extras. Orlando Bloom couldn’t handle it when a girl wasn’t in love with him and made it his goal to woo her throughout the episode. Samuel L. Jackson’s episode involved Ashley making racist comments in front of him. Daniel Radcliffe feels the need to prove his manhood by hitting shamelessly on women, while walking around in a boy scout’s outfit, his costume for the film.
For anyone who has a heart.
Harry and the Potters: a ridiculous punk band that has been writing music about obscure Harry Potter events and characters for as long as HP has been around. They’re still performing and people dress up in Harry Potter costumes to go to their shows. They’re definitely dorks, but at least they don’t take themselves seriously. Come on, at least listen to the Hogwarts Tonsil Hockey Team. and Wizard Chess. and, call me crazy, but I might legitimately like The Blood of a Prince.
Finally, Britt and I saw this in a tiny bookstore in DC. In case you were wondering…
